Sunburn and premature skin ageing
Sunburn is a local burn of the epidermis, varying in extent and degree, due to UVA and UVB rays (both artificial and natural). It takes the form of painful redness. If deep layers of the skin are affected, 2nd-degree burns occur and swellings form. Repeated sunburn greatly increases the risk of skin damage, especially if it occurs during childhood.
Each individual has a greater or lesser capacity for producing melanin : people who produce a lot of it tan easily and are thus less sensitive to sunshine; people who do not produce much of it have far more sensitive skins.
Moreover, extensive exposure to UV rays may also dry the skin and destroy collagen and elastin fibres, giving rise to wrinkles.
