UV index
The WMO, World Meteorological Organisation, and the WHO, World Health Organisation, have jointly compiled a sun risk scale, known as the UV Index. The UV Index are generally published in each country by the national organisations in charge of meteorology. The scale of UV Index is broken down as follows:
INDEX
  1 to 2: low risk - 3 to 4: medium risk - 5 to 6: high risk - 7 to 8: very high risk - 9 to 10: extreme risk
A UV Index of 1 is equivalent to 0.9 SED received by each individual during a period of 1 hour. Knowing that 3 SED are required to cause slight sunburn on a skin considered to be sensitive, it will thus take 3 hours and 20 minutes to cause this sunburn if the UV Index is 1 but only 20 minutes if the UV Index is 10.
Please roll over on the graph on the left to estimate the time to develop an erythema for a fair skin according to UV Index.
